Nepalgunj Marathon

Sustainability Policy

Last updated 21 August 2026

We want the Nepalgunj Marathon to leave the Terai better than we found it. This policy sets out how we run the event responsibly and what we ask of participants. WASTE We are working toward a low-waste event: cups and packaging are collected and segregated at every aid station, and waste volumes are measured each year so we can reduce them. Please drop litter only inside the marked drop zones just after each aid station — the clean-up crew works those areas. SINGLE-USE PLASTIC We are progressively phasing out single-use plastic bottles on course. Runners are encouraged to carry a reusable soft flask or cup for the longer distances. WATER & LOCAL ENVIRONMENT Routes are planned to avoid sensitive habitats and farmland. Signage, arrows, and tape are removed within 24 hours of the finish, and the full route is swept for litter on race day. SOURCING We prioritise local suppliers, local food, and local labour for the event, and reuse infrastructure such as banners, barriers, and signage across editions wherever possible. TRAVEL We encourage shared transport to the start, and coordinate shuttle services from central pickup points where numbers allow. MERCHANDISE Finisher shirts and medals are ordered against confirmed entries to avoid surplus stock, and unclaimed kit is donated to local running and school programmes. We report on our progress against these commitments after each edition.
